Definition of Narrative Text

A narrative text is text which tells a story (it is usually imaginative story) to entertain people, or to give moral values (teks narasi adalah cerita imaginatif yang bertujuan menghibur orang atau mengajarkan nilai-nilai moral). Because it is imaginative, the story is not based on a real story. it was created by someone to entertain or sometimes to teach a good value. (Karena bersifat imajinatif, ceritanya tidak didasarkan pada kisah nyata. itu dibuat oleh seseorang untuk menghibur atau terkadang untuk mengajarkan nilai yang baik.)the examples of Narrative texts are Cinderella, Sangkuriang, Snow White, Rabbit and Crocodile.

The story such as: Cinderella, the beauty and the beast, Sangkuriang, Snow white, Rapunzel, sleeping beauty, thumbelina are called Fairy Tales. (Cerita seperti: Cinderella, the beauty and the beast, Sangkuriang, Snow white, Rapunzel, sleeping beauty, thumbelina disebut Fairy Tales.

Kinds of Narrative Text (Jenis Teks Narrative)

1. Fable (fabel): Cerita yang menggambarkan tentang binatang.
2. Legend (legenda): Cerita rakyat yang menggambarkan bagaimana asal usul suatu tempat itu terjadi
3. Myth (mite): Cerita mitos ini banyak beredar dalam masyarakat dan umumnya diaggap sebagi cerita faktual.
4. Fairy tales (dongeng): Cerita rakyat yang biasanya disebut sebagai dongeng atau cerita anak-anak yang berisi banyak keajaiaban pada tokoh-tokoh ceritanya dan sering mangandung pesan moral
5. Folk tale (cerita rakyat): Sebuah cerita yang dituturkan turun temurun sehingga menjadi bagian dari tradisi suatu masyarakat
6. Love story : kalau cerita cinta ini lebih pada tema ceritanya yang berisi perjuangan untuk mendapatkan cinta bagi tokoh cerita.

Social Function of Narrative Text (Fungsi Sosial Teks Narrative) / Purpose/intention of the Text (Tujuan Teks)

Social Function of Narrative Text is to entertain or amuse the readers or the audience. it is also used to give/teach moral value
(Fungsi Sosial Teks Naratif adalah untuk menghibur pembaca atau penonton. Narrative Text juga digunakan untuk memberi / mengajarkan nilai moral.)

Generic Structure of Narrative Text

Orientation : It is about the opening paragraph where the characters of the story are introduced. it also tells when and where the story take place. (berisi pengenalan tokoh, tempat dan waktu terjadinya cerita (siapa atau apa, kapan dan dimana)
Complication : Where the problems in the story developed. (Permasalahan muncul / mulai terjadi dan berkembang)
Resolution : Where the problems in the story is solved. Masalah selesai, secara baik “happy ending” ataupun buruk “bad ending”.
Coda / reorientation (optional) – lesson from the story . (pelajaran yang bisa diambil dari cerita)

Language Feature

adalah ciri-ciri bentuk bahasa yang digunakan dalam sebuah text. suatu teks akan memiliki pola bahasa khusus dalam penyampaiannya, pola ini bisa berupa tenses, bisa juga berupa aturan grammar lainnya.

Use of past Tense

Menggunakan Past tense (bentuk kata kerja lampau)

they laughed so hard they rolled around on the floor laughing.

Cinderella was kind and smart and beautiful.

The girls were very confused! this they did not expect.

Use of Adverb of time

Narrative text menggunakan beberapa kata keterangan waktu seperti:
Once upon a time,
Long time ago,
one day,

Use of Time Conjunction

Narrative Text juga menggunakan time conjunction; merupakan suatu bentuk kata hubung dalam bahasa inggris yang digunakan untuk menunjukan waktu atau time.
Example:

• when, 
• then, 
• suddenly,
• in the next day, 

Specific Character

The character of the story is specific, not general. (Cinderella, Snow White, Alibaba, Rapunzel, etc)

Use of Direct Speech

Direct speech. It is to make the story lively.

Snow White said, ”My name is Snow White" 

The direct speech uses present tense. 

Use of Adjective (kata Sifat)

Teks narrative banyak menggunakan kata sifat untuk menggambarkan karakter tokohnya. misal:

• cinderella is a kind and beautiful girl
• the witch was very wicked
